Tobacco-Free Hospitals Campaign: Montefiore Achieves Prestigious Gold Star Status
Montefiore has achieved Gold Star Status as part of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Tobacco-Free Hospitals Campaign, an initiative developed to support hospitals throughout the city in implementing comprehensive quit-tobacco systems.
Montefiore is leading the way in creating wide-ranging services for its employees and patients and is setting the bar for other New York City hospitals. To achieve Gold Star status, a hospital must:
- Review campus policies and employee cessation services;
- Complete assessments of inpatient and outpatient quit-tobacco systems;
- Provide verification that the systems adhere to current clinical practice guidelines and best practices; and
- Commit to continuous quality improvement through the ongoing identification and treatment of tobacco-using employees and patients.
We are immensely proud of this achievement, which displays our leadership and commitment to the care of our staff

Montefiore Honored Nationally for Fair and Inclusive LGBTQ Care
Montefiore is proud to be named a 2017 Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality. The distinction was awarded in response to our commitment to providing equitable, knowledgeable, sensitive and welcoming healthcare to members of the LGBTQ community, their families and our associates.
Montefiore received the distinction after participating in the Human Rights Campaign’s Health Equality Index (HEI) survey, which evaluated hospitals and healthcare facilities across the U.S.
The Human Rights Foundation developed the Healthcare Equality Index more than a decade ago to meet the urgent needs of LGBTQ Americans and help close the gap in ensuring equal and inclusive care to LGBTQ patients and their families. Learn more>
Montefiore Earns Gold Star Recognition for Healthy Food Initiative
A meal in one of our cafeterias isn't your standard, stereotypical hospital fare. It's why we're proud that our Wakefield, Moses and Weiler Campuses earned a “Gold Star” recognition (the highest award possible) for our participation in the Healthy Hospital Food Initiative.
As part of the initiative—run by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene—we revamped and took a healthier approach to the food and beverages served in our cafeteria, vending machines and patient meals.
The result (other than our coveted Gold Star) is hospital food that's healthy and just plain delicious. Learn more
